More subscription TV channels are on the cards after five companies were granted conditional broadcasting licences, Icasa said on Tuesday.
"Although the conditions imposed are specific to each of the five applicants, they generally relate to amongst others, confirmation of equity ownership, funding requirements, further research, confirmation of local content and programming content agreements," Independent Communications Authority of SA spokesman, Paseka Maleka said.
He said the licences had been granted to Close-T Broadcast Network Holdings, Mindset Media Enterprises, Mobile TV, Kagiso TV, and Siyaya Free To Air.
"These applicants have been given a period of three months to comply with the conditions."
Icasa originally published an invitation to apply for the commercial subscription broadcasting licences in February 2012. Public hearings were subsequently held in July 2013 at Icasa's offices in Sandton.
