A 65-year-old man accused of stock theft was beaten to death in Nqwanti near Mthatha in the Eastern Cape, police said on Tuesday.

Lt-Col Mzukisi Fatyela said a mob attacked the old man on Monday.

"They accused him of stealing sheep. He was assaulted and died."

He said six people aged between 20 and 34 were arrested on Monday night in connection with his death.

"We expect to arrest more people," he said.

The six would appear in the Bityi Periodical Court on Wednesday.
