Pregnant woman killed and dumped in bin

A DISAGREEMENT between two lovers resulted in the woman leaving their home, and three months later she was dead.

On Tuesday morning, community members in Bloemspruit, Bloemfontein, were attracted to a terrible stench from a rubbish bin and subsequently discovered the badly decomposed body of 20-year-old Dieketseng Lebete, who had left her home on July 21.

On Tuesday, a 36-year-old suspect was taken into custody following the discovery of Lebete's body.

Police spokeswoman Lieutenant-Colonel Thandi Mbambo had earlier revealed that the suspect's landlord had complained about the stench coming from his room. He had then allegedly stuffed the body in the bin and dragged it outside.

Lebete was seven months pregnant with her lover, Thapelo Saila's child. Her legs had been bound together with a rope. Police believe that she could have been kept in the suspect's room for well over a month.

"She was very short tempered," a distraught Saila said yesterday. "I had gone for drinks that day, and had returned home at around 10pm. She became upset and left, saying she was visiting her family at the nearby Chris Hani informal settlement. The following day, she called, using a number I did not recognise, saying she would be home soon. The line went dead and that was the last I heard from her."

Police spokesman Constable Peter Kareli yesterday said an additional charge of murder had been added, considering that Lebete was pregnant at the time of her death.

"More charges could be added later on," he said. - selebim@sowetan.co.za
