No burial date yet for hijack victims

FUNERAL arrangements are yet to be made for the three people who were killed in a gruesome hijacking incident in Klipfontein, Ekurhuleni, last weekend.

This was revealed by the lone survivor of the horrific incident, Peter Bapela, who has also said that he was happy that the police had arrested four of the five suspects and confident that the manhunt for the fifth would yield results.

While the four suspects were to appear in the Tembisa Magistrate's Court today on charges including murder, attempted murder and possession of stolen property, Bapela was grappling with the fearsome moments he had spent together with his cousins Stephen Matlaila, 23, and Joy (Nono) Matlaila, 21, and Stephen's girlfriend Nthabiseng Kekana, 20, after they were hijacked at gunpoint outside their home last Saturday night.

Bapela, 30, had managed to escape from the blue BMW 325 as they were driven around, even when he had been tied with a rope and bundled into the boot of the hijacked car, and had the spare wheel placed on his head.

"I later managed to untie myself, opened the boot and jumped out while the car was moving," Bapela has said. He was rescued by three passers-by and managed to call the police. - Sowetan Reporter
