The SABC learnt with great sadness the passing of one of its colleagues, friend and SA icons on Saturday, 18 May 2013.

Yesterday South Africa came together to celebrate the life and times of the iconic SABC presenter Vuyo Mbuli at a memorial service held at the Renaissance building at SABC Johannesburg Auckland Park.

Busy schedules of dignitaries where put on hold to remember this extraordinary man.

In attendance was First lady Bongi Ngema, ANC NEC Member Winnie Madikizela Madela, ANC General Secretary Gwede Mantashe, SABC’s Chief Executive Officer Lulama Mokhobo, together with fans, friends and family.

The proceeding began with the SABC choir who set the tone with songs such as “ I'm going home”.

Mokhobo who welcomed the attendees and expressed her shock at the attendance said, “This ceremony should have been held at a stadium”.

Tributes continued to pour form various SABC colleagues such as SABC 2 General Manager Ms Bessi Tugwana , National TV News Editor Mr Nyana Molete, SA fm Station Manager Mr Dennies O’ Donnell and Morning Live Executive Producer Ms Nothando Maseko.

Maseko remembered Mbuli with his dedication to his work and family “Vuyo used to tell me that my children are my reason for waking up, they are my dream”. Maseko who was joined on stage by the entire Morning Live team offered words of comfort to the Mbuli family. “Savita many say life begins at 40 but for you, you begin your years of 40 with a new chapter” she added.

Leanne Manas who brought tears to many said, "it is amazing that when I first met Vuyo’s parents, I think they saw him through me, it is a good feeling because he taught me a lot of things in the years I have worked with him. Before we went on air Vuyo used to say let's go and do magic”.

Performances fromm artists such as Swazi Dlamini, Ringo, Soweto sting Quartet, set the right tone.

Vuyo Mbuli, 46, collapsed while watching the Cheetahs' 27-13 Vodacom Super Rugby win over the Reds at the Free State Stadium on Saturday May 18. It was reported that he died from a pulmonary embolism.

Mbuli a former teacher joined the SABC in 1993 on the old sports channel and moved to join the weekday show Morning Live as co-host. He also anchored his own show on SAFM, The Morning Talk.

Not only was he a respected radio and TV broadcaster but he will be remembered for being a great teacher and storyteller.

Mbuli will be buried on Friday at West Park Cemetery hero’s Acers.
