'We're running at a loss'

DESPITE its problems, Metrobus simply has no choice but to continue to render services.

"The price of diesel has been going up and continues to go up," said acting managing director Lawrence Maqekoane.

"As a municipal-owned bus company, we do not increase our fares to recoup increases in operating costs, because we are also a service delivery mechanism.

"Our fares must therefore be affordable to the majority of the citizens. The cost of fuel has risen to a point where Metrobus has been running at a loss from the previous financial year.

The increase in the price of diesel, high maintenance costs because of the aged fleet and the repayment of long-term loans have affected our cash-flow and we now have a high overdraft balance."

Maqekoane said the company was in the process of upgrading its fleet.

"The City has recently approved that Metrobus can acquire about 150 buses in the next financial year. We have assembled a team of managers to implement this decision ..."
