Gauteng premier Nomvula Mokonyane urged senior public servants to use their influential positions and ensure implementation of government policies, including the National Development Plan (NDP).

She was welcoming delegates to the 2013 government leadership summit being held in Pretoria.

"You remain the trusted bureaucratic leaders of this government, and if we choose to be nonchalant in our approach to service delivery then the over-arching National Development Plan will suffer the worst kind of stillbirth," she said.

"Consequently, the poor masses will continue to be trapped in a cycle of poverty and unemployment. Their liberation therefore lies in your hands.

"I would like to urge you to recommit and serve this government with diligence and unwavering loyalty."

The annual summit was also attended by senior government figures acting President Kgalema Motlanthe, and ministers Trevor Manuel, Lindiwe Sisulu, Collins Chabane, and Thulas Nxesi.

Hosted under the theme "Leading the Public Service to Higher Productivity", the conference is aimed at providing a platform for government leaders from national, provincial, and local spheres to meet and seek ways to fast-track service delivery.
