It will cost the Cape Agulhas municipality R10 million to fix damage to property caused by storms in Arniston at the weekend.

Arniston councillor Eve Marthinus told the Cape Times that the wind and rain had been so severe she feared no houses in the Overberg town had been left unscathed.

She said many of Arniston's gravel roads had also been damaged.

As the storm started to gain strength on Friday night, emergency services opened culverts to allow storm water to flow away, emptied the contents of septic tanks before they were flooded and pumped water from low-lying areas.

According to the report, campers at the Waenhuiskrans campsite, close to the sea, were hit by the storm.

"It was quite serious. All the tents got blown over and flooded on Friday night and all their stuff got wet," campsite manager Angeline Prince said.

Cape Agulhas municipality spokeswoman Anneleen Vorster, however, said that despite the town being waterlogged and muddy, no injuries were reported or property severely damaged.
