TWO Mpumalanga men who were shot by a police officer during a protest over water in Carolina, Mpumalanga, have one wish - to be able to walk again.

Jacob Masina, 35, and Mthobisi Mngadi, 25, were injured together with Fanyana Sibanyoni, when police opened fire on a group of protesters on May 16 last year.

Said Masina: "They were carrying R5 assault rifles. The bullet went through my leg. We were taken to Carolina Hospital where we were placed under police guard."

Said Mngadi: "The bullet went through my knee. I was operated on in June last year. Every time I go for a check-up, I am told that I have to be operated on again but they cannot do that until the previous operation has healed. I am in pain and have to use crutches."

But Masina's dream may come true soon because Health Minister Aaron Motsoaledi has promised to help him.

Motsoaledi heard about his plight through his aunt, Deliwe Masina, who addressed delegates at the National Council of Provinces' "Taking Parliament to the People" programme in Carolina on Wednesday.

Deliwe said they were being sent from pillar to post, prompting the minister to offer his help.

"There is something about what you are saying that touches me. I will take him to a hospital in Pretoria," said Motsoaledi, who then ordered his officials to get her contact details.

Masina said when he went back for a check-up at Witbank Hospital he was transferred to Ermelo Hospital.

"I am told that they are waiting for a specialist doctor to operate on me," said Masina who says his foot aches a lot especially in winter. - mashabas@sowetan.co.za
