'Blade Runner' investigator feels the heat

INVESTIGATING officer Warrant Officer Hilton Botha says he is opposing Oscar Pistorius's bail application because he is a "flight risk".

Botha told the Pretoria Magistrate's Court yesterday that Pistorius had offshore accounts and property he had not declared in his sworn statement, which makes him a flight risk.

However, state advocate Gerrie Nel said those properties and accounts had not yet been investigated.

Magistrate Desmond Nair asked Botha: "Do you think someone who has won an Olympic gold would forsake his career and not pursue his interest to prove his innocence?" Botha said yes.

Botha said he believed Pistorius would flee to a country that did not have an extradition agreement with SA because he had the means to do so, "and it would be difficult to get him" should he flee.

Botha also said he wanted an additional charge of unlawful possession of ammunition added to Pistorius's murder charge.

Ammunition for a .38 handgun was found in a safe in Pistorius's house after the murder of his girlfriend.

But Pistorius's attorney, Barry Roux, told the court the ammunition did not belong to Pistorius.

"Did you take steps to find out who the ammunition belonged to?" Roux asked Botha. "No, I did not," Botha replied.

Roux said the ammunition belonged to Pistorius's father.

Asked about previous callouts to Pistorius's house, Botha said: "I don't remember the exact date, but there was an incident in his house ... after which he was arrested for assault."

Botha said after the incident a case was opened.

He said the case was later withdrawn because when he went to the scene of the alleged incident, he realised what had happened matched Pistorius's version of events.

There are currently civil proceedings, started by Pistorius, of malicious prosecution and wrongful arrest.

Botha also referred to other incidents in which Pistorius allegedly fired guns and threatened other people.
