'I did not rape patient'

A MALE nurse accused of raping a terminally ill cancer patient denies he sexually abused the woman.

Kodisang Michael Moema told the Bloemfontein High Court he did not rape the 50-year-old woman, who later died at another hospital.

The victim was a patient at the National Hospital in Bloemfontein when the alleged incident took place.

"I did not rape her and I'm aware of her allegations that a female nurse pinned her down, while a man raped her."

Moema confirmed that between October 14 and 16 in 2011 he was working night shift.

"I took her temperature, pulse and heartbeat and wrote them down. A nursing sister later asked her how she was feeling."

According to a report presented in court, Moema said on October 16 2011 a nursing sister wrote "fine this morning and no new complaints (from patient)".

He denied they gave the woman an overdose of morphine as she alleged. The trial continues. - ntwagaes@sowetan.co.za
