THE boy is three years old but he cannot walk or talk properly. He crawls from one place to another.

Siyabonga Mnisi's mother Nkululeko Ngomane, 21, from Mshadza village near White River in Mpumalanga said she feared that her son was disabled and needed special care but nurses at the Phola Nsikazi Clinic were failing to see what his problem was.

The mother said her child could have some disability as he was unable to do what other children his age could do such as talking and walking.

"His left foot is weak. He cannot balance well. When he stands up, he has to hold on to something. He cannot walk and has speech difficulty," Ngomane said.

She said when she goes to the clinic, the nurses "only stretch his foot".

"They have been stretching his foot for about two years now but there is no progress. My son is forced to stay at home because I fear he may get injured at the day care centre. He needs special care," she said.

Ngomane, who has another child aged 11 months, said she was unemployed and could not afford to take her son to a private doctor.

Siyabonga crawled across the yard, playing with his mother when Sowetan visited.

"I would love to see my son walk like other children. It hurts me to see him like this. People make fun of him. They say he is disabled," she said.

"I do get grants for my children but it won't be enough. A friend told me that I may need about R10000 for his treatment. He is not getting any help now and it might be making his condition worse."

Ngomane has pleaded for help. "If he gets treatment he will be well," she said.

Mpumalanga health spokesman Ronnie Masilela said the department would intervene to help the child.

"We will assess the situation and help the family immediately," Masilela said. - mashabas@sowetan.co.za
