Farmworker fired after being 'insulted'

A MAN who was fired from a Free State poultry farm has accused his employers of plotting his dismissal after he complained of being insulted.

James Mosounyana, 38, was employed as a general worker for a year and a half at L. Gromer, situated between Edenville and Heilbron.

"I was fired for complaining that a senior manager called me a k****r on duty. If I had not raised that matter with management, I would still be working now," Mosounyana said.

He said he was standing outside the factory with colleagues on October 16 last year, waiting for a truck to unload live chickens when an operational manager arrived and asked why they were standing outside and not working .

"I told him I was waiting for a truck with chickens to arrive as it was our duty to unload chickens.

"He demanded that we run back inside and work. I stood there alone and he threatened to fire me and then called me a k****r.

"I told him I was going to take the matter forward with our managers," Mosounyana said.

On November 27, he was called before a disciplinary hearing and fired two days later.

According to the dismissal notice, that Sowetan has seen, Mosounyana was fired for "poor time keeping, [being] absent from work without permission and extending meal breaks without permission".

George Roodt, a manager at L. Gromer, refused to comment on Mosounyana's allegations. He accused Mosounyana of "running to the media" to solve his problems.

South African Human Rights Commission spokesman Isaac Mangena said the word k****r reflects racial hatred and anger against black Africans. - ntwagaes@sowetan.co.za
