Cops bust 8 for car hijacking

Eight people have been arrested for a spate of hijackings in Berea, Durban, KwaZulu-Natal police said

Acting on a tip-off, police found a Dodge Journey parked at a house in the area on Monday.

It had been hijacked in KwaDabeka on Sunday, Colonel Jay Naicker said.

“There was no one at the house at the time. Even the gate was not locked. Police hid themselves with the belief that suspects might come.”

While police lay in wait, a Volkswagen Polo with two occupants arrived.

“The VW Polo vehicle was checked and it was discovered that the vehicle was hijacked in Umbilo on Friday, 2 November. Both suspects were immediately arrested.”

Another man arrived in a Volkswagen Golf and was also taken into custody.

The arrested men took the police to another three people at the Berea shopping centre in the Musgrave area.

There, a man was found in possession of a VW Polo hijacked in September, and was arrested.

Another car, hijacked in Pinetown, was found in Mariannhill and the driver was arrested.

One of the men was found in possession of a pistol.

“We are convinced that they will be linked to other hijackings in the province,” said Naicker.

He said the men, between the ages of 20 and 40, would appear soon in the Durban Magistrate’s Court on charges of hijacking and possession of stolen property.
