STRANGLED: Zanele Khumalo, who was allegedly killed by her lover, wanted out of the relationship.
STRANGLED: Zanele Khumalo, who was allegedly killed by her lover, wanted out of the relationship.

THE Pretoria High Court has heard that the 18-year-old teenager who was allegedly strangled by her boyfriend was unhappy and had wanted to get out of the relationship.

Zanele Khumalo's friend Gaongalelwe Ganki Letoale testified that 26-year-old accused Thato Kutumela would not let her out of the relationship.

Khumalo was allegedly strangled by Kutumela at her parents' home in Garsfontein, Pretoria.

She was five months pregnant with Kutumela's child at the time of her death.

Letoale said on the day of the murder, she saw Kutumela in a blue top and pants as she walked out of the complex gate were Khumalo also lived.

She said when she went back to her house, she saw him behind a danger box, now in khaki pants and a black top. She said she saw him struggling to close the bag he had with him.

"I found it very strange that he was changing behind the danger box when he was from his girlfriend's house . and that was the last time I saw him," she said.

She said Khumalo was excited about the pregnancy and they had planned to visit the nearest clinic that day.

"I sent her messages, but she did not respond. I was tempted to go to her house, but I thought because she was pregnant maybe she wanted to rest.

"I later learnt from her younger sister that she was dead.

"I became emotional and went to the pool [our favourite hangout] and sat by myself. Then it clicked that I saw Kutumela earlier that day. I then made a statement to the police."
