Court interpreter agreed to bribe from robber's girlfriend

A WIN FOR THE GOOD GUYS: Instead of getting the cash, she got arrested

An interpreter at the Polokwane Magistrate’s Court appeared in the same court on Tuesday on a charge of corruption, Limpopo police said.

Brigadier Hangwani Mulaudzi said Winnie Chauke, 52, was arrested on Monday after she allegedly accepted a R1,500 bribe from an undercover police officer who posed as a criminal.

The money was allegedly still in her possession during her arrest.

Police investigations found that Chauke had also received a phone call from an awaiting trial prisoner - who was in custody for a series of armed robberies in and around Polokwane and Mankweng.

The prisoner’s girlfriend is alleged to have planned to hand over money to Chauke in return for the cases against him to be withdrawn.

Chauke is due to appear in the Polokwane Magistrate’s Court on Friday for her bail application.
