Departmental spokesman Ronnie Mamoepa said the incident happened at a service in Bulwer, Northern KwaZulu-Natal, for the children who died on Monday while being transported to school in a bakkie.
"After the funeral service, when the majority had left, the marquee collapsed," he said.
The children were killed on Monday when their bakkie overturned on the R617 between Bulwer and Underberg, KwaZulu-Natal.
