Zuma camp in clean sweep

PRESIDENT Jacob Zuma's power has been consolidated after his supporters in Limpopo made a clean sweep during the Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu) provincial elective conference at the weekend.

Zuma's supporters won all leadership positions at the tense, but peaceful conference held at Bolivia Lodge in Polokwane on Friday and Saturday.

Former provincial chairman of the federation, Ronnie Morwatshehla, and former treasurer Kate Matlou, became the only casualties after they were defeated.

Morwatshehla's former deputy Essob Mokgonyana took over the hot seat while Matlou was replaced by a dark horse, Anna Makgopo.

Morwatshehla publicly supportedPremier Cassel Mathale, who has been lobbying against Zuma ahead of the ANC's national conference in Mangaung.

Dan Sebabi, provincial secretary, retained his position after defeating his main challenger Gerald Thwala, who represented the South African Municipal Workers' Union.

Speaking to Sowetan after the conference, Mokgonyana said they still had confidence and trust in the leadership of the ANC that was elected into office in Polokwane in 2007.

"Among our conference's resolutions is to intensify the fight against corruption and making sure the alliance is functional," said Mokgonyana.

He said they would also fight hard to uproot the new tendencies within the movement, "where tenderpreneurship becomes the order of the day".

"We also want to instil discipline in those members who seek to sow division in the movement as a way of ensuring a united ANC ahead the national conference," he said.
