EXPELLED ANC Youth League president Julius Malema's attempt to come back from the political wilderness was yesterday defeated in the ANC's national executive committee meeting.
The ANC NEC, the party's highest decision-making body, met yesterday to discuss among other things the expulsion of Malema and the suspensions of the league's secretary Sandiso Magaqa and spokesman Floyd Shivambu.
In their 26-page report to the NEC, in which the youth league is requesting a review of the decision against its leaders, it states that the leaders do not know which sins they have committed but that they had their own observations.
It repeats its previous view that the leaders were being purged because of being outspoken on issues like nationalisation.
The report, which was presented before the NEC, also states that the youth league's leaders were kicked out of the ANC because the league enjoyed massive political support among South Africa's poor and downtrodden masses, as opposed to those who were failing and facing rejection of the masses.
"We therefore request . that officials of the ANC look for a political solution into this matter other than the punitive actions put by the national disciplinary committee," the reported stated.
Despite the youth league's presentation, the NEC meeting took a decision that the matter had been closed and cannot be discussed either at national policy conference at the end of the month or in December at the national conference.
This, according to sources, was supported by President Jacob Zuma.
Those in support of Malema accused Zuma of denying the league their constitutional rights because he closed the debate.
At least four sources who attended the meeting told Sowetan that a sizeable number of NEC members fought for Malema's comeback but that they did not not win.
Malema, together with Magaqa and Shivambu, had pinned their hopes of returning to the ANC on yesterday's NEC meeting.
With the NEC having rejected the review, the trio's only hope will be the ANC's national conference in Mangaung in December. But they will have to lobby ANC delegates to raise the matter as they are not supposed to attend any ANC gatherings.
The ANC will today announce the outcomes of the meeting.
