RESIDENTS of Monyakeng in Wesselsbron in the Free State have disputed claims by the cash-strapped Nala local municipality that it is delivering services.

This comes after Sowetan had seen a letter addressed to Public Protector Thuli Madonsela in which the municipality claims it was "thoroughly" attending to service delivery in the township.

In the letter the municipality claims it has "prioritised the sewerage plant system and removal of buckets".

Officials from Madonsela's office are planning to visit the area soon to investigate the council's claims.

Among some of the claims made by the municipality, were: that it had procured new cabling and a cost evaluation would be done to repair the aerator; that the municipality had employed more security personnel at the plant; that shift schedules were in place and routine checks were conducted.

The municipality also claims that a service provider has been procured to suck sludge and that households have been divided into four sections to make the removal of buckets easier.

The council claims 13 additional contract workers have been appointed and that an additional tractor and suction trailer has been procured, that the schedule for removing buckets has been changed from once a week to twice a week.

According to residents who spoke to Sowetan all these claims by the municipality are lies.

"When did they employ people? Who are these people? Our sanitation problem has not been solved. The municipality is lying. I have never seen the tractor and sucking machine that they claim to have bought," v Sechele Khati says.

Martha Magwaxa says her bucket is collected once a week, not twice as the municipality claims.

Cope's Papi Radebe says the municipality is lying.

At the sewer plant there have been no improvements since Sowetan's visit last month. The plant is not working and the place is flooded with waste. Electrical cables have been stolen and there is no security personnel as claimed.

Madonsela is currently investigating allegations of mismanagement of funds and corruption in the municipality.
