HE is sure to be the butt of many jokes, but for a Port Elizabeth man a bet is a bet – even if it means having Julius Malema's face permanently inked on his backside.
While it is widely accepted that soccer fans take their teams very seriously, few would make the bet Mike Dorward and Tom Pullen did.
Ahead of this year’s Champions League final match between Bayern Munich and Chelsea on Saturday, Dorward and Pullen decided that the supporter of the losing team would have to have a tattoo inked on his buttocks.
Then came the decision of what would be tattooed on the loser’s.
Dorward, the owner of bar and restaurant Music Kitchen, said: “You know how these things are. We were sitting – it must have been about 1am – at the bar, and we’d been drinking brandy.
“Basically, Tom’s a Chelsea fan, and I’m for anyone but Chelsea.
“We made a bet that whoever backed the wrong team had to get a tattoo on his arse.”
The next question, obviously, was which design to have inked.
“I have no idea how it got there,” Dorsaid. “I think we just wanted the worst possible thing there. We must have gone through a dozen ideas, but nothing really caught on. Eventually, I guess we just seton Malema’s cartoon face. It’s just so ridiculous and terrible.”
The design the pair settled on came from political satirical cartoonist Jonathan “Zapiro” Shapiro.
Dorward and Pullen e-mailed the cartoonist for his permission.
“He actually ended up promoting this whole thing pretty heavily on his own website – we even had a poll where his followers got to choose from four different Malema designs,” Dorward said.
On Saturday, Bayern Munich took on Chelsea in the finals, and Pullen and Dorward gathered fans, friends, supporters and a tattoo artist from Bay studio Yo! to watch the game at Dorward’s restaurant.
“We set up in a sterile environment, where they [the tattoo parlour] could administer a 100% and safe tattoo directly after the game,” he said.
The game played along as the first half ended with no score. It came down to the wire when Thomas Mueller for Bayern and Didier Drogba of Chelsea scored.Eventually, the game ticked over into the penalty round. Goal after goal was booted in by each team, keeping the crowd in suspense.
“Bastian Schweinsteiger missed his first penalty shot ever during this game,” Dorward said. “I mean, what are the odds of that?”
Bayern lost the game when Drogba sunk the next shot for a 4-3 victory.
Dorward went immediately to the temporary tattoo booth.
“The rest, as they say, is history,” he said.
