Former Nigerian Olympic athlete Ambrose Monye has been cautioned to make “concrete arrangements” for his legal representation before his matter is heard in the Pretoria High Court
Monye faces charges of murder, conspiracy to murder and illegal possession of a firearm.
He appeared in the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court on Thursday and was served with a notice to appear in the High Court in November.
In a previous appearance Monye asked the court to grant him time to “fix” his financial problems and get his initial lawyers back on the case.
On Thursday the lawyers were not present to receive the notice on Monye’s behalf.
He was handed the bundle of documents, and read them for a while before closing them.
Prosecutor Andrea Johnson told the court she had communicated with the lawyers and they had indicated they were not ready to represent Monye because he owed them “substantially”.
“It is very clear that you want Mr Jay (lawyer Peter Jay) to represent you in the trial. It is also very clear Mr Jay has no plans of representing you in that trial,” magistrate Maryke de la Rey told Monye.
“Make concrete arrangements for yourself before this matter takes off. Speak to whoever you want to represent you, but avoid a situation where you will be forced to represent yourself in the high court,” she said.
Advocate Jeff Ledwaba said he had taken up Monye’s representation for the bail application, but “would not be involved in other matters”.
The application was postponed to June 15 in the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court.
Monye and four other men were arrested for killing a young Pretoria woman, Chanelle Henning, in November last year.
She was shot dead by two men on a motorbike as she was driving along Manitoba Drive in Faerie Glen, east of Pretoria.
She had just dropped off her child at a pre-school.
