Gunman opened fire, threw down his gun and escaped on foot
A man was shot and wounded outside the Western Cape High Court on Tuesday, police said.
The man, aged 35, had been walking out of the court with his cousin for refreshments at 11.30am when an unidentified man shot him, Captain Frederick van Wyk told reporters at the scene.
He said the man was shot in the leg, and not in the mouth according to some bystanders.
The gunman threw down his .38 revolver about 30 metres away while fleeing on foot.
“The motive is unknown at this stage but we are investigating the possibility that it’s gang-related,” Van Wyk said.
No arrests had been made.
The wounded man was taken to a nearby hospital.
Police were seen gathering witnesses for statements and earlier searched four men outside a nearby coffee shop before placing them in the back of a police van.
A forensic expert checked for residue on the firing mechanism of the revolver.
The gun lay near a bin, not far from a pool of blood where the man had been moments before.
The scene on Keerom Street, Cape Town, was cordoned off as crowds of curious people gathered to look at the blood.
A bystander, Junior Ngumbi, said he was walking with a client towards the court around noon when he heard a gunshot and a woman screaming.
“There was lots and lots of blood but I could see he was still conscious,” he said.
Ngumbi showed a photo of the man lying in a pool of blood with a woman leaning over him, propping him up on a jacket.
