THE Methodist Church of Africa has lost one of its greatest leaders with the sudden death of Rev Sidwell Boy Qomoyi on April 5 at the age of 58.
Born on January 3 1954 at Vaalbank, Lady Frere, Qomoyi was one of three children.
He was educated in Eastern Cape, which proved to be the fountainhead of his formative years and where he received his formal education.
Qomoyi, described as a "devil-dodger to the core", was an avid reader of the scriptures and his sermons were so captivating that they remained in the minds of the congregants for weeks.
After having dedicated his life to the church, he was a workaholic and never allowed quarrels within the church movement to derail his the plans he had for his church.
Qomoyi, affectionately known as "SB", abhorred treachery and mediocrity and did not suffer fools gladly.
He has left a gaping hole in the church community that will be a mammoth task to fill.
Seen as a visionary, eloquent debater and God-fearing man, he will forever be missed by his family, colleagues and congregants.
He is survived by his wife, four children and three grandchildren.
Qomoyi will be cremated at the Lenasia Crematorium in Soweto tomorrow.
The funeral service will be held at Umthombo we Lwazi Community Hall in Dobsonville Extension 3, and the procession will proceed to the crematorium.
