A DOBSONVILLE family is devastated after two of its members were killed in a tragic accident yesterday morning.
At about 6.05am, a Putco bus headed for Randburg ploughed into a house in Braamfischerville, killing a couple as they slept inside their home.
Mike Motswiri, 44, and his live-in lover Mathabiso Kamadi, 33, were asleep in their RDP house at the time.
It is not clear what caused the bus to veer off the road into the house.
Police spokesman Mponde Khoza said the bus and another vehicle approached a stop sign at a crossroads in Braamfischerville.
"We do not know which one did not comply with the rules of the road, failing to stop, and the bus, trying to avoid the small vehicle, went through that house and flattened it," he said.
All 44 passengers in the bus and both drivers were taken to various hospitals around Soweto with minor injuries.
Gauteng traffic police spokesman Obed Sibasa said witnesses said that the bus and the car were travelling at excessive speed when approaching the stop sign and both failed to stop.
Residents gathered around the demolished house in utter shock as rescue workers tried to remove the bodies from the flattened house.
The crowd broke out in a mournful song as the bodies of the couple were pulled from the rubble and placed into the coroner's van.
Minutes later the grieving family arrived to gather the personal belongings of the deceased.
Motswiri's mother, Sanah Motswiri, 75, was overcome with grief as she spoke about how she was with the couple at the weekend.
"Everything was fun and he was very happy," she said.
Putco marketing manager Raphiri Matsaneng expressed his condolences to the bereaved families.
He said the driver had been working for Putco for almost 15 years.
"The record that we have is that he is a very conscientious driver, a very good driver so [we] are also keen to find out exactly what happened today," Matsaneng said.
He added that the company would look at ways to compensate the family for their loss.
Motswiri's mother, who lives in Dobsonville, Soweto, will now be the sole caretaker of her two grandchildren who lost their father - a son and daughter aged 22 and 19 respectively.
The bus driver faces two counts of culpable homicide and the woman driving the other vehicle involved will also face criminal charges for her role in the tragedy.
