Tertiary students to spend more this year

HIGHER education students are expected to spend about R33 billion this year. This is according to research by youth marketing company Student Village.

Their annual Student Spending Report 2012, which was recently released in Johannesburg, indicates that student spending power has gone up from R28,5billion in 2010.

Student Village's Anelisa Mzinyathi said: "The research showed that the average monthly spend per student is R3268, giving us an average yearly spend of R39216. That's some serious money."

The research was conducted between February and March and 1220 students at five universities were interviewed.

Seventy-seven percent of students get their money from their parents, 18 percent from part-time work and bursaries account for 10percent of all income.

According to Mzinyane, up to 90 percent of students saved R250 a month to buy cellphones, clothing, computers, laptops and travel.

This year alone, students have already bought over 330000 cellphones and close to 35000 have new cars.

Other findings indicate cultural differences. Black students spend more on hair and beauty, Indian students eat out the most, coloured students splurge on fashion, and white students spend up to three times more on cigarettes and alcohol.
