Youth League's Mabe under fire

SLATED: Pule Mabe

ANC Youth League secretary-general Sindiso Magaqa says the league has received complaints from KwaZulu-Natal regions about treasurer-general Pule Mabe.

Without going into details, Magaqa said: "We have received complaints from regions and we will deal decisively with those matters, but it is an internal matter of the ANC Youth League which we do not wish to discuss publicly."

The complaints came after the league in KwaZulu-Natal launched a public attack on Mabe, saying he was campaigning in their province to replace embattled league president Julius Malema, who is facing suspension or expulsion from the ANC.

Mabe denied that he went to KwaZulu- Natal to campaign. He said he was mandated by the ANCYL national lekgotla to meet with regional treasurers throughout the country to develop a fundraising strategy.

"I am meeting treasurers of regions as part of the programme to see how we can raise funds. That programme was discussed at the lekgotla and it was announced at a press conference. It is not a Pule Mabe programme. Please speak to the ANC Youth League because this is an organisational programme," Mabe said.

But Sowetan understands that some ANCYL national executive committee members and provinces like KwaZulu-Natal, Gauteng and the North West are prepared to defend Mabe.
