Nanny wants ransom for baby

KIDNAPPED: Kgosientsile Morobe

A PRETORIA mother woke up yesterday morning to find her baby's cot empty and the 21-year-old Zimbabwean nanny she hired three months ago missing.

The 33-year-old mother, Mita Morobe, now fears the worst, saying the nanny she hired through an employment agency and shared a bed with could be "capable of anything if she had the guts to take away a six-month-old baby from his mother".

Morobe, a nursing teacher at Thuto Bophelo Nursing Academy in the Pretoria CBD, said she set her alarm clock for 5.30am but it did not go off and she woke up 40 minutes later to find that the nanny had disappeared with her little boy - Kgosientsile.

"When I woke up she was not in bed. I went to the cot and my baby was not there. I did not suspect anything until I went to my handbag to find that my house keys, purse with R5,000 in cash and my cellphone were missing.

"This is when I realised that she had stolen my baby."

According to Morobe, who stays with her younger sister Ita Dawutola at the Morganhoff Golf Estate in Pretoria North, the nanny locked them inside the house. They were let out by a caretaker.

Moments later, Morobe's sister who was on her way to buy airtime so they could call the police, received an SMS from the nanny saying she wanted R45,000 for the safe return of the baby and that they should never call the police.

"She also wanted my bank PIN number so that she could withdraw money to buy food for the baby. I called her number but she did not pick up," Morobe said.

After receiving the ransom SMS, the hysterical Morobe called Talk Radio 702 and police were immediately involved.

Police spokeswoman Warrant Officer Annerie Robinson said they were using all available resources to track down the nanny.

"We are investigating a case of kidnapping and extortion, but I cannot give details of the leads we are following as this might jeopardise chances of the child's safe return."
