The killing of a Pretoria-based dermatologist is a huge blow to the medicine industry, said the Dermatology Society of SA on Monday.
“His untimely death cuts off a great future and will be recorded as another tragic loss for South Africa,” said society president Robert Weiss.
Dr John Moche, a 41-year-old dermatologist at Steve Biko Academic Hospital, was shot and killed by hijackers on Friday night.
According to weekend reports, two armed men approached Moche who was sitting in his car outside a complex in Viljoen Street in Pretoria.
One of the men shot him in the chest and fled with his Range Rover.
Weiss said Moche was a highly esteemed dermatologist who was determined to ensure the highest standards of dermatology training.
He was the author and co-author of several papers and was involved in teaching.
The society called on the health and police ministers to make sure Moche’s killers were arrested.
The Gauteng health department said it was shocked by the murder. Health MEC Ntombi Mekgwe and department head Nomonde Xundu sent their condolences to Moche’s family.
