Zuma had to rethink his choice of judges

IN OCTOBER, President Jacob Zuma announced the names of senior judges to serve on two important commissions of inquiry. But hours later he was forced to backtrack on two of them.

Johannesburg High Court Deputy Judge President Willem van der Merwe recused himself from the Seriti Commission into the arms deal for personal reasons.

Retired Constitutional Court jjudge Yvonne Mokgoro said she could not chair an inquiry into suspended police chief Bheki Cele over the R1.6-billionbn police lease deals.

In September, Zuma had to settle for Judge Mogoeng Mogoeng after his nomination of Judge Sandile Ngcobo backfired.

Ngcobo's colleagues on the bench later declared Zuma's nomination unconstitutional.
