ARCHBISHOP Desmond Tutu has urged young people to empower themselves with an education to be able to interrogate those in power.

Tutu told about 200 people at Cape Town's Small Business Place in Philippi during the Education Indaba at the weekend that they must not be terrified to ask awkward questions.

"You must always ask "WHY?" Why whites get a better education than black people? Why lesbian and gays are sometimes seen as un-natural. Why we stigmatised them in a way that they want to hide," the archbishop said.

University of Western Cape rector Brian O'Connell said education is SA was in a dire state as the standard of matric results was poor and that led to the qua-lity of students entering universities exposed to low standards.

"Don't expect the government to do everything for you. If people can study there could be few protests," O'Connell said.
