Bank helps university with Saica

LEADING banking institution Nedbank has partnered with the University of Limpopo to ensure that the university meets the standards set by the South African Institute of Chartered Accountants (Saica) to receive accreditation to offer a full accounting degree.

The partnership is viewed as a breakthrough in skills development as the accreditation will benefit South Africa in its quest to rapidly develop skills.

It is hoped that students in Limpopo and other provinces in the country interested in studying at the university would welcome the developments as they can now obtain their accounting qualification at this historic institution.

Nedbank has been instrumental in ensuring that the university met the criteria set out by Saica since 2008. The bank has invested more than R3-million and also established a chair of accounting at the institution to ensure continuous evaluation of all efforts aimed at meeting the standards.

Kone Gugushe, the bank's divisional executive for corporate social responsibility, said they hoped the new developments would enable the university to contribute to the national drive to develop skills "because the country needs to double the number of accounting professionals it produces".

"More importantly, the university services disadvantaged students and this will be a major boost for them."

According to him, the journey for Saica accreditation started in 2004 "only to be realised this year".

Professor Cosmas Amber from the university said: "It has been a long journey, but Nedbank's support from 2008 in establishing a chair of accounting paved a way for a sound application for accreditation .

"We are grateful for the commitment shown by our partners to ensure that the university can realise its dream of producing high-calibre accountants."
