DURBAN metro police have expressed concern about the fact that many motorists are continuing to flout road rules despite ongoing road safety campaigns.

Nearly 100 people were arrested for traffic offences and outstanding warrants in Durban at the weekend.

Metro police and the toad traffic inspectorate officers were hard at work on the roads as the festive season approaches.

Metro spokesman Eugene Msomi said 96 people were arrested for violating traffic laws.

He said 81 motorists managed to pay their fines on the spot in order to avoid jail time and the remaining 15 were taken into custody.

"When you're detained on a warrant the courts make a decision on whether to reduce the fine or release you on warning and make arrangements for you to pay the fine that is owed," Msomi said.

Meanwhile, Cosatu in KwaZulu-Natal yesterday expressed "shock and sadness at the senseless" killing of provincial principal inspector Ashrina Ramklown of KZN RTI by a speeding biker.

Ramklown, 33, was killed as she tried to stop a speeding motorbike next to Midmar Dam in Howick.

"This is just one of the many lives that are lost due to high levels of intolerance to road regulations and traffic instructions," Cosatu provincial secretary Zet Luzipho said.

Luzipho labelled the incident as a "slap in the face" on "operation val'ngozi", a campaign launched on Friday.

"It is with regret that the culprit also passed on because the state can no longer make an example of him. Worse, the culprit is a former Metro police officer," Luzipho said.
