Lesbian killing: four men guilty

FOUR Khayelitsha men have been found guilty of murdering lesbian activist Zoliswa Nkonyana in the sprawling township six years ago.

On Friday Sabelo Yekiso, Lubabalo Ntlabathi, Mfundo Kulani, Sabelo Mase, Luyanda Londzi, Mbulelo Dama and Themba Dlephu appeared before Magistrate Raadiyah Wathen in the Khayelitsha magistrate's court.

The case had provoked outrage among activists because it was postponed more than 50 times.

Nkonyana was beaten by her attackers, kicked and then stoned to death after she fell to the ground.

About 20 youths were arrested on the day of the murder but many have since been released because of a lack of evidence against them.

Last month Anele Gwele and Zolile Kobese were also acquitted of murder.

Ntlabathi, Mase, Lonzi and Dama were found guilty of murdering Nkonyana.

But Dlephu, Yekiso and Kulani were acquitted of murder due to a lack of evidence.

Free Gender provincial chairman Funeka Soldaat said though they were happy about the judgment, more people had been acquitted due to police incompetence.

The case was moved to October 27 for pre-sentencing .
