20 people lose lives in crashes

TWO doctors and their two-month-old daughter were among 20 people killed on South African roads over the past three days.

Another crash claimed the lives of nine members of a Gauteng family on their way to a relative's funeral in KwaZulu-Natal. The minibus taxi they were travelling in overturned after a tyre burst on Saturday morning.

Jane Furse police in Limpopo said Dr Mochadibane, 28, of Lebowakgomo Hospital, her husband Dr Maxhotshane, 38, of Jane Furse Hospital and their daughter were killed when the bakkie they were travelling in overturned on the Mamone Road on Friday night. The other occupant of the vehicle , Tshepo Kgolane of Mamone village, was admitted to Jane Furse Hospital in a serious condition.

Station commander Lieutenant Colonel Rapule Mosima said the four had just left Jane Furse Hospital when they crashed at 11.45pm.

The crashes at various parts of the country flew in the face of the United Nation's endorsed Decade of Action for Road Safety campaign, launched by transport ministers within the Southern African Development Communities countries in Johannesburg on Friday.

The campaign is aimed at reducing road fatalities, globally estimated to be 1,3million annually. Road accidents are believed to leave 50million people injured every year.

The Road Traffic Management Corporation warned there could be more chaos on the roads as holidaymakers returned home before schools opened today. RTMC spokesman Ashref Ismail said national freeways, which included the N3 between Johannesburg and Durban, N1 between Polokwane and Pretoria, and N4 between Nelspruit and Pretoria, were expected to be the busiest.

"Also the N1 between Bloemfontein and Johannesburg is expected to be busy because of people coming back from the Macufe festival (Free State)," Ismail said.

Netcare Emergency Service said three people were killed and two others critically injured after two vehicles collided head-on on Elias Motsoaledi Road near Dobsonville, Soweto.

Netcare's Chris Botha also said two people died and four others sustained serious injuries in an accident involving two vehicles in Barry Marais Road in Boksburg on the East Rand.

Five people were injured on Woodhouse Road in Pietermaritzburg in KwaZulu-Natal.

Botha said a biker was killed and another was fighting for his life in hospital after a side-impact in which they were hit by a vehicle while crossing Hans Strijdom Road in Pretoria.

Also yesterday, 15 people were injured in Bethlehem, Free State, when a minibus taxi rolled over on the R26 Reitz road.

The Department of Transport said 2000 people were killed on the country's roads in September. A week ago, nine people - five school children and four teachers from the East Rand - died in Harrismith, Free State, on their way to KwaZulu-Natal on an educational trip.

Five soccer players died in a car accident in Balfour last weekend.
