Jiyane to head Freedom Park

Keen insight: Fana Jiyane
Keen insight: Fana Jiyane

FREEDOM Park, the institution created in Tshwane in 2000 as a repository of memories of the struggle, has appointed Fana Jiyane as its chief executive.

Jiyane assumed his duties yesterday, taking over from celebrated poet and author Mongane Wally Serote, who retired in March.

Serote, who is the founding CEO, relinquished the position in March to concentrate on full-time writing, his passion for many years as a multi-awardwinning poet. Said to have intimate knowledge and hands-on experience when it comes to the management of heritage sites, Jiyane's background includes serving as CEO of both the Cradle of Humankind World Heritage Site and Dinokeng near Cullinan.

Shirley Mabusela, the chairwoman of Freedom Park's council, said: "Today marks a new chapter for Freedom Park. We are fortunate to have a man with Mr Jiyane's vast experience and keen insight into heritage destination management at the helm. Mr Jiyane offers a unique combination of strategic management, economic development, tourism and research skills.

'The council, management and staff are looking forward to taking Freedom Park to new heights under his direction, ensuring that we continue to flourish as one of SA's heritage destinations of choice."

Jiyane graduated with an honours degree from the University of Witwatersrand, after which he obtained a master's degree in philosophy from the Institute of Development Studies at the University of Sussex.

He started his career as an economics lecturer at Khanya College, where he later became an executive director.
