ANC Youth League treasurer Pule Mabe is in trouble for allegedly assaulting a patron during a drinking binge at Namakgale in Limpopo at the weekend.

Mabe allegedly assaulted his long-time friend Molate Nakana, 28, for allegedly calling him a name he did not approve of. The incident took place at Oddo's Tavern in Namakgale near Phalaborwa on Friday night.

Limpopo police spokeswoman Lieutenant-Colonel Ronel Otto confirmed yesterday they were investigating a case of intimidation and assault against Mabe.

"We can confirm that we are investigating a case of intimidation and assault against Mabe. The case was opened on Saturday by the victim and the culprit will be arrested soon," Otto said.

Nakana said yesterday that Mabe assaulted him in the company of his bodyguards and in full view of other patrons.

Nakana said he had called Mabe "Bra Mokolekwa", a name they used to call him when he was younger.

"Mabe apparently did not take kindly to the name and started assaulting me."

Nakana said Mabe accused him of having been sent by President Jacob Zuma to tease him.

"He initially told me I need to be taught a lesson as I was disrespectful. He said I was a small boy before beating me up," Nakana said.

According to Nakana, Mabe later bought him six ciders, apparently as a way of buying his silence.

Contacted for comment yesterday, Mabe confirmed he was at the tavern on Friday with the victim and other patrons but denied he assaulted him.

"People are just desperate to get me," Mabe said.
