Daggers out over Malema row

DIVISIONS among supporters of ANC Youth League leader Julius Malema in North West have created tensions between provicial ANC secretary Kabelo Mataboge and chairman Supra Mahumapelo.

Insiders say there is a move by Mataboge and his supporters to pass a motion of no confidence against Mahumapelo at the provincial executive meeting on Monday. They plan to replace him with his deputy China Dodovu.

At the heart of the tensions is a decision by Mahumapelo to honour a Luthuli House instruction that ANC members who participated in the recent violent protest outside the party's headquarters be disciplined.

Mataboge has opposed the move.

The protest was led by Malema supporters who objected to him being brought before the ANC disciplinary committee.

Mataboge, who is a former national executive committee member and provincial secretary of the ANCYL, is said to be a close ally of Malema, while Mahumapelo has been linked to a faction sympathetic to ANC general-secretary Gwede Mantashe.

Provincial ANC sources said yesterday that Mahumapelo was also behind a failed bid to remove Mataboge for his failure to register seven ANC members in Tlokwe region with the IEC as candidates in the recent local government polls.

But Mataboge has denied there are divisions .

"There are different opinions and we are working very hard on unity. These different opinions have been distorted to mean that they have to do with the ANC succession in 2012," he said.

He denied knowledge of a plan to pass a vote of no confidence against Mahumapelo.

"We know that the ANCYL had a march and they were calling for the removal of some leaders. The ANCYL is raising a concern about certain contradictions. We will meet with them and see how we can manage the issues."
