Radio presenter on rape charges

A MAGISTRATE has advised a community radio station personality, accused of raping two boys, to use a lawyer for his bail application, as he was facing serious charges.

Zamile Mkontwana, a presenter at Radio Zibonele, appeared briefly before magistrate Richard Sikhwivhilu in the Khayelitsha magistrate's court yesterday.

Mkontwana, 33, is facing charges of rape and making pornographic movies. He allegedly raped two boys - aged eight and 10 - in Makhaza.

He was arrested by the family violence, child protection and sexual offences unit on August 14 at his home, after the boys' parents laid a charge with the police.

Yesterday, Mkontwana appeared in court for the third time. He was not asked to plead. Prosecutor Njobe Dlamini said he had received a call from the lawyer representing Mkontwana asking that the case be postponed as he was not available.

Mkontwana agreed to wait for his lawyer to do his bail application on September 29.
