Suspended principal 'is unfit for work'

THE Gauteng department of education is considering declaring suspended Meadowlands Senior Secondary School principal Moss Senye medically unfit to continue working.

The department said yesterday that it was consulting its lawyers on the issue.

Senye has on several occasions missed court appearances, presenting a medical certificate.

"We are amazed that a handful of parents and learners are demanding Mr Senye's reinstatement," spokesperson Charles Phahlane said yesterday.

"On three occasions he has claimed that he is so ill that he cannot attend his court or disciplinary hearings."

The Johannesburg high court has issued a court interdict preventing the school's governing body and parents from barring pupils and teachers from going into the school premises.

Yesterday hundreds of pupils blockaded the busy Van Onselen Street in Zone 2 Meadowlands with rocks and school bags. They also trashed the street, forcing cars to make U-turns.

This was after they had refused to go into the school despite police having broken the lock and forcefully opened the gate.

Police then dispersed the pupils and parents just before midday.

Senye and teacher Fancy Phehle were suspended in February this year after their arrest for allegedly assaulting a 17-year-old pupil at the school.

The pupil was allegedly hit with open hands and fists and kicked by the two after he had been "disruptive" in class.

The National Association of School Governing Bodies Meadowlands branch chairperson Buddy Sekatane said yesterday they were consulting on a way forward.

"We will challenge the interdict. It's our children's future at stake here."
