MEC salutes women farmers

NORTH West MEC for agriculture and rural development Boitumelo Tshwene says he is impressed by women who are participating and contributing meaningfully to food security and job creation.

Tshwene says his department is encouraging women to continue to be involved in agricultural projects in spite of adversities in this field said to be a man's domain.

Addressing female farmers in Mahikeng yesterday, Tshwene said the department remained dedicated to the social and economic development of women.

"We have always acknowledged women achievements in agriculture and rural development by providing opportunities that allow them to take centre stage to be architects of their own destiny.

"We have also identified and given support to women involved in agriculture through a variety of projects such as mechanisation, offering them Nguni cattle, Female Entrepreneur of the Year awards and other programmes potentially to develop women, you also can benefit," he said.

Women's contribution in agriculture and their fight against poverty had not gone unnoticed as they had been rewarded and recognised through awards.

"As we celebrate the emancipation of women and pay special tribute to all women, let us defend and protect their rights. And as a sign of government's commitment to women empowerment, the department has continuously placed the empowerment and development of women at the top of its priority," Tshwene said.
