TWO Soweto policemen accused of supplying ATM bombers with ammunition will face their fate today

Constables Authority Gamede and Vincent Hlubi will know if magistrate Denise Morton will grant them bail or not.

On Friday, the prosecution argued strongly against the men being released on bail, saying one of them was linked to an ATM bombing through a cellphone.

State prosecutor Yusuf Baba told the Protea magistrate's court that one of the men accused of gunning down a Soweto police reservist had been in contact with the two policemen.

So far Hector Mabaso and Sifiso Shezi have been arrested for the killing of police reservist Constable Busisiwe Mehlwana.

Mehlwana and a colleague were responding to an ATM bombing at a Total garage in Pimville, Soweto. Baba told the court that Hlubi and Gamede had kept phoning Mabaso before the ATM bombing took place.

Reading from an affidavit prepared by the investigating team, Baba said that on July 5, before the filling station was attacked, Hlubi had contacted Mabaso using his cellphone.

"It has come to light that the cellphone used belonged to one of the accused. The men had been in contact with Mabaso from 3pm," Baba said. Gamede and Hlubi did not deny they had been in contact with Mabaso.

The policemen on trial were arrested after being involved in an accident with another vehicle in Soweto.

"Gamede was arrested for reckless and negligent driving. From July 1 the accused had been in contact with Mabaso. And on July 5 they had been constantly in contact with Mabaso from 3pm. The place at which they were arrested is not far from where the policewoman was shot and killed," Baba said.

Their lawyer, Phaladi Kanyane, said Mabaso and Gamede knew each other and came from the same place in KwaZulu-Natal.

Kanyane said on that day the two officers were involved in a collision.

"Gamede, who was driving, was arrested. He used Hlubi's cellphone to contact a friend to arrange bail money and that friend turned out to be Mabaso," Kanyane said.
