Protesters barricade major highway

Day starts with burning tyres

Fifteen people were arrested on Thursday after barricading the N2 highway at Nyanga in Cape Town with burning tyres, Western Cape police said.

“At this stage, I can confirm the arrest of 15 people for public violence,” Warrant Officer November Filander said.

He could not say when they would appear in court.

About 60 people gathered in protest over poor service delivery and housing around 5.30am.

They were believed to have been from the Crossroads informal settlement, situated near the Cape Town International Airport.

Filander said the group had dispersed but police were monitoring  the area.
