Dilapidated school gets R3m facelift at last

AFTER many years of schooling in dilapidated buildings, pupils at the Phishego Primary School in Seshego, Polokwane will on Monday return to a revamped school

Sowetan ran an article recently in which parents complained about the state of the school structure.

The school has a new look now after renovations amounting to more than R3million was organised by Capricorn district municipality mayor Lawrence Mapoulo, a former pupil at the school, and the Limpopo department of education.

Mapoulo said renovations were at an advanced stage and that the school would be ready by the beginning of the third term next Monday.

He said the renovations included new toilets, fitting of tiles, new windowpanes, and a new roof.

Pupils and teachers at the school had been forced to attend classes under an asbestos roof that could collapse at any time. The toilets at the school were no longer user-friendly.

Since 2005 pupils and 16 teachers shared two toilets and the unbearable stench from the toilets could be smelt 300m away because some children were responding to the call of nature anywhere in the school yard.

"On rainy days both teachers and pupils had to squeeze themselves into one classroom," said school governing body chairperson Lawrence Thantsa yesterday.

"Our school was built in 1966 and had never received any facelift before. We are happy now that all our problems are a thing of the past. From now on, we hope our teachers will teach with ease and children learn without any fear."
