Joy as poor family gets a new house

AN EPILEPTIC and illiterate mother had her dream come true when she was given a house in Orange Farm, south of Johannesburg, on Friday

Maria Hlope, 44, her sister Belina and son Nkosana have been living in a small, dusty shack with no ventilation for the past 17 years.

Belina Hlope, 51, said: "We have lived under these conditions for a very long time, with no access to water or electricity."

Hlope described their living conditions as difficult, especially when it came to taking care of the sickly Maria.

The family has never lived in a proper house and their joy was palpable when the house was handed over to them.

"I want to thank International Business Machines (IBM) South Africa and Habitat for Humanities for blessing us with this fine home.

"Not only did they save our lives but they have truly showed us that God really does wonders" Maria said.

Both Hlope sisters are unemployed and live off Maria's pension. Belina's son also makes a little money playing soccer.

As part of Habitat for Humanities' annual housing initiative, the company is giving away 10 fully furnished houses to families that live under harsh conditions. Habitat is giving the houses away throughout July.

"What we basically did for these families is we moved them from shacks to newly built houses that have two bedrooms, a lounge, kitchen and a bathroom" said Nokwazi Ngcongo, national resource developer at Habitat.

Eight houses are being built in Gauteng, one in KwaZulu-Natal and the other in Cape Town.
