Nursing crisis

THE North West health department revealed yesterday that the province needed more than 2000 nurses to complete its nursing staff complement.

Spokesperson for the department Tebogo Lekgethwane said 71 new community service nurses would be deployed to health facilities in the province next month to do a mandatory one-year community service.

"This is in addition to 227 community service nurses that were released to do community service between January and April this year," he said.

Lekgethwane said the department was pleased that the plan to produce 1592 professional nurses would eventually curb the shortage. He said the department would in the next five years increase access to healthcare by placing 1592 nurses to curb the current shortage.

The department this year awarded 220 bursaries to new recruits at nursing colleges and North West University to study for a four-year diploma in nursing science and midwifery.
