Tender man placed on special leave

A LIMPOPO municipal official accused of awarding irregular tenders has been put on special leave

Sekhukhune district municipality technical services unit head Ntwampe Thobela was laid off with effect from Wednesday, pending the outcome of the investigations.

Ntwampe's unit was accused of awarding tenders worth R85million without following proper procedures.

Four projects were allegedly awarded to companies owned by one person.

The companies were to work on the Nkadimeng regional water scheme for bulk water supply.

They were expected to install big pipes underground to draw water from the dams, supply the water to arid villages hardest hit by drought and to build a reservoir and a reticulation plant.

The evaluation process allegedly took place on a Saturday afternoon, while municipalexecutive mayor David Magabe was overseas on a family trip.

Minicipal spokesperson Willy Mosoma confirmed yesterday that Thobela was put on special leave, pending investigations into the alleged irregularities.

"We have decided to put him on leave for two obvious reasons - that he is head of the unit at which the alleged irregularity is levelled and that he was chairperson of the evaluation committee when the alleged irregularity took place," he said.
