Musos protest outside court in piracy case

Thokozani Xulu, known as Tizozo, said the musicians would help police to expose more piracy kingpins

MASKANDI legend Phuzekhemisi, members of the kwaito award-winning group Big Nuz, Tizozo of Tizozo and Professor fame, and Crown Gospel Music Award winner Sfiso Ncwane yesterday protested outside the Durban magistrate's court where a Congolese couple appeared on charges of piracy and possession of fake CDs and DVDs.

They carried placards with slogans - "Say no to piracy" and "Piracy is theft" - before Kampire Moza, 24, and Lubantu Rodrigue, 19, appeared in the dock.

Thokozani Xulu, known as Tizozo, said the musicians would help police to expose more piracy kingpins.

"It is the kingpins we want to expose because they are the ones supplying the street vendors."

The musicians said they were disappointed that people were "perpetuating piracy and killing the future of South African music".

Police spokesperson Captain Thulani Zwane said police raided a house in Umbilo Road on Tuesday night after receiving a tip-off and found the two "busy at work".

"They found about 600 DVDs and CDs and also confiscated the machines and computers .."

Heinrich Botha of Recording Industry of South Africa said offenders could pay a fine of up to R5,000 or face three months in jail, or both.

The two remain in custody and the case was yesterday postponed to June 1 for a formal bail application.
