Gauteng 'probes' Midvaal

THE Gauteng government is expected to release the findings of its investigation into allegations of corruption and racial segregation in the Midvaal municipality by the end of next week.

The Special Investigations Unit is looking into the matter but Gauteng local government and housing MEC Humphrey Mmemezi has also instituted his own investigation.

Mmemezi told Sowetan yesterday: "I've had lawyers working in Midvaal and something is coming. The corruption here will be seen by all.

"By the end of next week, the results of our investigation will be known.

"According to information provided to me, Sowetan's series of articles were spot-on. We will take action to recover peoples' houses," Mmemezi said.

This follows a series of articles in the newspaper this week about allegations that the DA is colluding with law enforcement agencies, private legal firms and the courts to systematically ensure that the voting majority in the area remains white.

Sonti Maseko, Moses Vilikazi and Gabriel Mohapi are some of the residents whose houses were demolished as they allegedly owed the municipality rates and taxes.

Mmemezi accused the Midvaal municipality of using delaying tactics to stall the approval of housing plans for families in about 27 informal settlements.

Sicelo informal settlement ward councillor Lefu Malia said that though issues are raised in council "they are brushed aside since the DA is in the majority".
