Two schools have been closed in Kuruman, in the Northern Cape, for contravening the Occupational Health and Safety Act, the department of labour said on Wednesday.
“The two schools were found to be contaminated with asbestos and having bare electrical connections that posed a health risk to the learners and educators,” labour department spokeswoman Monica Lepheane said in a statement.
In a meeting, the labour and education departments agreed that the schools had to be fixed within a specified time.
“When it comes to health and safety, there is no compromise, hence we suggest that there be assessment of all schools in the province and this can only be achieved when all stakeholders take part,” Lepheane said.
